Our Activities

New Zealand is surrounded by ocean.  We rely on the sea to transport 99 per cent of our trade, and our oceans are a major source of food and resources.  New Zealand is not immune from threats to our security.  Piracy and terrorism, even far from our shores, affect the safety of the sea lanes and impact on our trade.  Instability, conflict, and war also directly affects New Zealand’s economic and social security.

We have a responsibility to be ready and prepared for any situation, and to support our neighbours and friends in times of need.  To do this our Navy is trained and prepared to undertake peacekeeping, humanitarian work, border patrol, maritime surveillance, search and rescue, disaster relief and anti-piracy operations worldwide.
