Pacific Partnership
Pacific Partnership is a US initiative which works with partner nations, non-governmental organisations and other US and international agencies to execute humanitarian and civic assistance missions. The New Zealand Defence Force contribution this year included medics, for first aid training, and electricians for work ashore.
This year's mission is focused ashore with a variety of engineering, medical, dental and veterinary civic action programmes for communities in Samoa, Tonga, New Caledonia and Solomon Islands. This year Petty Officer Marine Technician (POMT) Richard Boyd is the Royal New Zealand Navy Representative.
Commander John Duncan was involved in last year's expedition. Read about his experiences during Project Pacific Partnership 2008.
Tropic Twighlight
A similar project saw HMNZS CANTERBURY working with the Department of Conservation (DoC) to deliver much needed fuel to Raoul Island, then travelling to Apia to assist on a Joint Forces operation alongside NZAID.
Called Exercise TROPIC TWILIGHT, this humanitarian mission was part of an annual deployment to a South Pacific Nation to conduct close country training in a tropical environment with this years focus on the deployment of health services support (medical and dental) and engineers to the island.
