There are also opportunities to be part of international Peace Keeping efforts in various parts of the world, including Afghanistan, Iraq, and East Timor and this experience can be very rewarding and a change from the local environment. As a Construction Engineer your first posting will be to the Devonport Naval Base.
Construction Engineers in the RNZN work alongside civilian counterparts and their peers from Army and Air Force. The areas of work include:
- Project management
- Long term development planning
- Rationalisation & re-development studies
- Involvement in town planning and resource management issues
- Maintenance management
- Design and development
- Energy management
- Project Risk Assessment / Cost Benefit Analysis
Pre-joining Requirements
- Be a minimum of 17 years of age
- Have completed at least three years of secondary education
- Be a NZ citizen or have permanent residency and have lived in NZ for five years
- Be medically fit for service
- Be of good character – assessed by study of testimonials and a police record check
- Be free of any criminal convictions for the previous two years
In addition to the above pre-joining requirements, preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate good written, verbal and analytical skills; and who have already achieved one of the following qualifications: National Diploma / Bachelor of Engineering in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering or Construction Management, Property or Property Management majors at Diploma or Degree level, and Planning or Environmental Planning majors at Diploma or Degree level.
Consideration may also be given to applicants qualified in other industry disciplines.
Career Progression
After completing Junior Officer Common Training, you will be promoted to Sub Lieutenant, and be posted to Joint Logistics Support Organisation. Here you will carry out the general duties of a Construction Engineer. After you complete the Divisional Officer Leadership Course, you may also be responsible for a division of Sailors, managing their career, welfare and discipline. When you have completed the Incident Managers course at the Damage Control School, and completed the necessary time in rank you will be promoted to Lieutenant. Additional postings ashore and the opportunity for a peacekeeping role overseas will be available.
