Medical Officer

Medical Officers provide shore based and sea going care for RNZN personnel, and are also required to treat civilians with diving and other hyperbaric medicine related problems. As a Medical Officer at the Navy Hospital, a fully accredited private hospital with a 20-bed inpatient facility, operating theatre and a modern outpatient department, you will provide medical surgical services to Navy, Army and Air Force personnel, diving medicine service to civilians and occupational medicine for civilian employees of the Navy and nearby Dockyard. Private surgical care is also provided to civilians. The Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine Unit has a sophisticated hyperbaric chamber and physiology laboratory and is actively involved in international research.

On enlistment you would be able to work in General Practice or Occupational Medicine. As a trainee in Occupational Medicine with the Australasian Faculty, you would join the Faculty Training Programme. You are also able to work as a General Practitioner maintaining or working towards a General Practice Fellowship. You would also be required to complete a course in Diving Medicine, conducted at the Navy Hospital. Medical Officers are also encouraged to pursue post-graduate diploma level training in other areas relevant to military medical practice, such as sports medicine, diving medicine, community emergency medicine and general practice.

Pre-joining Requirements

  • Be a minimum of 17 years of age
  • Have completed at least three years of secondary education
  • Be a NZ citizen or have permanent residency and have lived in NZ for five years
  • Be medically fit for service
  • Be of good character – assessed by study of testimonials and a police record check
  • Be free of any criminal convictions for the previous two years

In addition to the above pre-joining requirements, to be eligible for entry into the Royal New Zealand Navy as a Medical Officer you should have been qualified to be registered as a New Zealand medical practitioner for at least two years and hold a current annual practising certificate. Medical Officers will be enlisted on fixed term engagements from 3-15 years.

Like all officers, you must also pass a two day final officer selection board.

Career Progression
Medical Officers undergo a shortened version of the initial Officer Training Course and have different criteria for promotion to Surgeon Lieutenant compared to other Specialist Officers, which results in quicker promotion. Medical Officer’s level of academic qualification and previous work experience often supports them being elevated to the level of Surgeon Lieutenant on completion of their initial Officer Training. Medical Officer's salaries are determined taking into account their academic qualifications and previous work experience within the medical community.

You can expect to spend several weeks at sea during your first two years of service; thereafter opportunities to serve on ships will arise on as required basis throughout your career. Depending on New Zealand Defence Force commitments you may also be given the opportunity to undertake international peacekeeping duties.
