The Navy requires officers that serve both at sea and ashore. Officers are required in every branch:
Technical Trades
Officers in the Technical branches are charged with keeping the vast range of equipment and systems onboard the ship functioning. They are divided into two groups: Marine Engineering which is responsible for float and move items, including the operation of main propulsion systems; and Weapon Engineering which is responsible for the management of all propulsion, auxiliary power generation and distribution on board. Officers in this branch include:
> Marine Engineer Officer
> Weapon Engineer Officer
Operations
Officers in the Operations branches are primarily focused on the Navy's tactical and navigational activities. These are the people that actually navigate the ship from point to point and operate the weapons systems. It is from these branches that officers are selected to become the Captain of the ship. Officers in this branch include:
> Airborne Tactical Officer
> Helicopter Pilot
> Warfare Officer
Logistics, Hospitality & Administration
Officers in the Logistics, Hospitality & Administration branch provide the range of services that enables the ship to operate for prolonged periods at sea. This includes the provision and preparation of food, supply of spare parts, maintenance of onboard stores, provision of medical support and personnel administration.

Specialist Officers
The Navy also employs specialist Officers, who are typically shore based, to provide specific, tertiary qualified skills. It is important to note that not all trades are required in each intake. Talk to our recruiters to see which intake the trade you are interested in is being accepted.
Specialist officers must have completed their tertiary qualifications prior to joining. These roles include:
> Chaplain
> Construction Engineer
> Education Officer
> Legal Officers
> Medical Officer
> Organisational Psychologist
The Navy provides dental and physiotherapy services to naval personnel, however these roles are held by civilians. The Navy does not train or enlist in these trades.
There are also specialised roles, available to sailors, who after a period of service can apply for internal transfer. These roles are based on availability only, and include Helicopter Crewman, Physical Training Instructor and Naval Police.
