Base Facilities

There is a wide variety of well supported sports teams and clubs within the Navy. Sports are actively promoted, not only because the fitter you are the easier your job will be and because teamwork is such an important part of being in the Navy, but because it’s a great way to relax and make friends.

Read more about our clubs and how you can get involved, the training times, competitions and affiliations.  If you can’t find the sport you are interested in, you could start one, or see whether the Air Force or Army have a team you can join.

Inter-service or inter-ship competitions are also held throughout the year, and just like the good ole Aussie-Kiwi rivalry, that same spirit is alive and well in the forces. There’s even the opportunity to be selected for a New Zealand Defence Force team and compete at international or national competitions.

Gyms
The main Naval Base has two fitness centres and a fleet gym, all with cardio machines and weights equipment.  At the fleet gym personal trainers run sessions for trainees, and hold circuits and team sports at lunchtimes so that other personnel can attend.

On evenings various fitness sessions are held for service personnel and their families including spin, yoga and pilates.

Our Ships HMNZ TE MANA, TE KAHA, CANTERBURY, ENDEAVOUR and RESOLUTION carry gym equipment onboard and physical training instructors are normally posted to these ships to take fitness classes.

Swimming Pool
The base has a six lane, 33 yard heated out-door swimming pool. Pool activities include training in sea survival, navy diver unit training, water sports, fitness and recreation. The Navy's Operational Dive Team completes some of their fitness qualifications here every six months.

The Devonport swimming club uses the pool in the morning and evening, and local schools use the pool by arrangement. At the weekend, naval personnel and their families have access for recreational use.

Adventurous Activities
The Navy Adventure Training Centre (NATC) provides equipment and facilitates adventure training in a range of activities such as tramping, camping, mountaineering, rock climbing and abseiling, caving, diving and snorkelling, sailing, sea and white water kayaking mountain biking, sky diving, challenging high ropes, leadership, teambuilding and risk management.

Adventure training will help you work better as part of a team and give you the opportunity to confront new experiences and challenges.  It’s also great fun.
