Pay Scales

The Navy uses a graduated pay scale according to rank and trade. Depending on your qualifications and personal circumstances you could expect to earn in excess of $40,000 after completion of your basic training and entry to service.

Information on specific pay scales for each job can be found in our Navy Jobs section, however, below is an indication of the starting salaries by rank.

As you progress through the ranks and complete training your salary is adjusted. Additional factors which can influence your salary are the qualifications you already hold, superannuation programme and accommodation allowances.

Officers
The starting salary for an officer, including specialised officers, will depend on experience, the rank they join at and branch they belong to. Minimum starting salaries, as an indication only, are:

 Rank Salary Indication
 Lieutenant Commander  $79,000+
 Lieutenant  $64,500+
 Sub Lieutenant  $52,500+
 Ensign  $40,500+
 Midshipman (and Training)
 $31,500+

The above are the minimum starting salaries for each rank and are influenced by superannuation, accommodation allowances and the level of qualifications or training completed. Specialised Officers
There are opportunities to join the Navy as a specialised officer. Specialised officers include Medical, Legal, Education, Psychologist, Construction Engineer, Chaplains, Pilots and Tacitcal Observers. For more information on these jobs visit our Officers & Management section.

On joining the Navy you would enter at Midshipman rank and be required to complete your Junior Officer Training, and any internal required specialised training. The remuneration, however, would be commensurate with any recognised existing qualifications and experience gained prior to joining.  Talk to our recruiters about what salary you may be able to expect on joining.

Ratings
The starting salary for a sailor will vary depending on the branch and trade you join, as well as prior qualifications and experience. Minimum starting salaries, as an indication only, are:

 Petty Officer  $55,000+
 Leading Hand  $49,000+
 Able Rate  $44,000+
 Ordinary Rate  $40,000+
 Training Phase  $31,500+
