Ongoing Training

In the Navy we value the ongoing development of our people. If you don’t get the opportunity to be sponsored through a tertiary qualification when you first join, there are still opportunities to gain one throughout your career.

All Navy personnel have the opportunity to complete studies part time through the Voluntary Education Study Assistance Programme or the Tertiary Study Scheme.

Voluntary Education Study Assistance Programme (VESA)
Voluntary Education Study Assistance Programme enables you to study (generally, but not exclusively, via correspondence) to further your education in areas that will be of benefit to both yourself and the Navy. Funding of up to $1,600 is available each year, which is based on the average cost of tuition fees for three undergraduate extramural papers.

Tertiary Study Scheme
The Tertiary Study Scheme provides a mechanism for selected personnel to undertake up to one year’s paid full-time study, for the final year of a diploma/degree or for postgraduate study.

To qualify you must have completed a minimum of eight years continuous service with an above average performance and be recommended.

This scheme is ideal if you wish to complete a qualification you have been working on via correspondence or if you want to gain a masters or other post graduate diploma.
