Sailor Training

Sailors, otherwise known as Naval Ratings, are the practical personnel who provide hands-on skills in a chosen trade. As sailors move up through the rank structure increasing opportunities for leadership and management roles.

All new sailors must complete a 13 week Basic Common Training Course (BCT) in Devonport, Auckland.

On completion of BCT you then complete Basic Branch Training (BBT) where you’ll begin training in your chosen trade.

Basic Common Training
The aim of Basic Common Training is to take you from civilian to a competent and self disciplined sailor.

Prior to joining all recruits are sent guidelines on how to prepare for various physical activities. The standard Navy fitness test involves shuttle running for seven minutes with a gradual increase in speed followed by 10 press-ups and treading water; all recruits must pass this test before they complete their training. For more information about getting prepared visit the Navy fitness requirements page.

A typical day’s training begins at 0530 and ends with lights out at 2200. During the day, routines involve cleaning stations, classroom lessons, kit preparation, inspections, physical training, and study time. There are some periods of personal time and leave where base recreation facilities may be used.

Phase One – Induction
The first phase of training focuses on inducting trainees into the Navy and lasts for five weeks. It is held at the Devonport Recruit Training Squadron and aims to place trainees under limited and controlled stress to:

  • develop teamwork
  • encourage mutual harmony and community well being
  • adapt to Naval discipline and regulations
  • participate in physical fitness training
  • understand and develop self-discipline
  • learn how to care for and clean your naval uniform

Phase Two – Corporate Knowledge
The second phase of training gives you the basic skills and knowledge to be in the Navy. Apart from academic and practical training there is an emphasis on teamwork. You will develop confidence, self-esteem and self-respect. Much of this phase will be spent doing various forms and levels of physical activity.

Parade training is also an important part of Naval life; it will teach you to think and work as a team to complete instruction quickly and correctly. One day in an emergency your life, or your comrade’s life, may depend on your quick response to a command.

Intakes
There are usually three intakes a year for Basic Common Training.  Find out more about the intake dates and how to apply: Navy Intakes and Application Process

Basic Branch Training
Basic Branch Training (BBT) is where you begin training in your chosen trade.  BBT programmes vary depending on your trade, however for most trades, an industry recognised qualification is attainable.  BBT could include time at the Whangaparaoa Training Facility, papers through Auckland University, AUT or other specialised training institutions.

The duration of BBT depends on the level of study required and the programmes offered; these could range from seven weeks to two and a half years.

Visit the individual jobs in the Navy Jobs section to see what trade specific training your preferred trade may offer, or talk to your local recruiter.

Ongoing Training
Throughout your career with the Navy opportunities to continue your education and achieve qualifications are provided. These opportunities depend on your trade and willingness to learn. Find out more about Ongoing Training.

Specialised Roles
After a period of service, there are opportunities for internal transfer to a number of specialised sailor roles. Candidates for transfer will only be considered after first attaining competence in their original career streams. It is therefore not possible to join and start your career in these roles; they are ‘progression only’ based.

The specialised roles available are helicopter crewman, Naval police and physical training instructors. More information is available on our Climbing the ranks page.
